New dentures should fit wonderfully because they are customized for your mouth. Over time, your mouth will change shape and the dentures will undergo wear and tear with use. They will need periodic adjustments to fit properly, and even the best dentures will probably need to be replaced after ten years. Here are a few signs that your dentures might soon need a replacement.

Your Dentures Fit Poorly

Your mouth changes as you age as its cells die and replace themselves, but your dentures will stay the same shape. If they fit properly, friction alone will maintain their tight fit to your gums. If you find that your dental restoration is slipping and sliding about or falling out of your mouth, that means you might have an issue with the way it fits. While poorly fitting dentures might just need adjustment, sometimes they need to be replaced.

Your Dentures Get in the Way of Speaking or Eating

Since a denture in good working condition should stay in place, it should give its wearer no difficulty while they eat or speak. If you notice that you are slurring your words or that your speech sounds “slushy”, it could be a result of your dentures no longer fitting properly. They might also require replacement if you experience pain or difficulty while chewing.

Your Dentures Are No Longer Comfortable

A denture that no longer fits properly can exert uneven or painful pressure on the soft tissues of the mouth. This can result in sores, lesions, bleeding, or other issues related to gum health. If your dentures are harming your gums, you should see your dentist as soon as possible regarding an adjustment or a replacement.

Your Dentures Are Showing Their Age

Dentures experience a lot of wear and tear over the years that can result in cracking, chipping, or loosening of the teeth. Such cracks and gaps within the denture can provide a haven for bacteria that can cause gum infections. While discoloration can largely be avoided with proper hygiene, dentures can still become yellowed or discolored after years of drinking tea, wine, or coffee while wearing them.

Staying aware of the signs that your dentures might need replacement can spare you a great deal of discomfort and inconvenience. If any of the issues listed here become a problem for your dentures, consulting with a dentist can determine if they need to be replaced or adjusted.

About the Author

Dr. Erin M.
