Patient talking to dentist about denture reline

Your dentures probably fit perfectly when you first got them, but have you ever wondered why they don’t stay that way? No, you’re not imagining things. The fit of a denture can change over time—and it’s not because your prosthetic stretched like a sweater. Your jawbone naturally changes shape after tooth loss, but this doesn’t mean you have to toss your teeth. A denture reline is a common and effective way to regain stability. Here’s how it works.

What Is a Denture Reline?

A denture reline is a procedure that reshapes the base of your denture, so it fits your mouth the way it’s supposed to. It’s a reset button that helps match the shape of your denture to the changing structures of your jawbone and gums. The result is a denture that feels better and restores more of your bite force, extending the life of your prosthetic.

What Are the Types of Relines?

There are two main options your dentist may recommend depending on your situation.

  • Soft Reline: This uses a pliable, cushion-like material on the inside of the denture and is often recommended for patients with recent extractions or sensitive gums. The softer material is gentler on tissue that’s still adjusting.
  • Hard Reline: During this reline, a more durable acrylic material that matches your denture base is applied. The results last longer than a soft reline and provide more stability.

What Does the Process Look Like?

The process is straightforward and usually completed in one or two appointments. Your dentist will first take an impression or digital scan of your gums while your denture is in your mouth. They’ll then use that model to add or reshape the fitting material. In-office relines can often be completed the same day, but sometimes a lab reline is required for more complex cases. These take a few days but tend to offer a more refined result.

When Is It Time for a Reline?

If your dentures are clicking, slipping, causing sore spots, or just don’t feel as snug as they used to, it’s worth bringing it up at your next visit. Most dentists recommend having dentures evaluated every year or two to stay a step ahead.

Dentures are more than just replacement teeth—they’re a constant companion that can restore your quality of life and your confidence. If you want to return the favor, continue seeing your dentist regularly and relining them when it’s time. Your smile will thank you for it.
